April Birthstones

at a Glance

Diamond holds April in the modern list, the traditional pre-1912 list, the Ayurvedic list and the Hindu list. The two biblical traditions both name sapphire instead — one of the clearest cases where the ancient assignment was displaced entirely, from roughly the 15th century onward.

Zodiac Signs for April

Aries (March 21 – April 19) and Taurus (April 20 – May 20).

Our Birthstone Picks based on Zodiac

‍Aries — Diamond

‍Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, and it behaves like it. Initiative arrives fully formed and immediately, without much interest in whether the ground has been prepared. The energy is never the problem. The aim sometimes is.‍ ‍

Diamond is the Stone of Invincibility, and its defining property is amplification — it magnifies whatever it touches, including the vibrations of other crystals. That makes it a demanding match for Aries rather than an easy one. A stone that amplifies will amplify indiscriminately, which means it rewards a clear intention and exposes a vague one.‍ ‍

Working through the Crown and Third Eye chakras, Diamond brings purity and clarity to a sign that generates far more heat than light. It is also, historically, a stone of commitment and enduring love — the quality Aries most often skips past in its hurry to begin the next thing.‍ ‍

For an April-born Aries, Diamond is less a source of fire than a lens for it.‍ ‍

Taurus — Diamond

Diamond is our pick for Taurus too, and the case is almost the opposite of the Aries one.

Taurus accumulates. That is the sign's gift — it builds, keeps and tends, creating the stability others rely on. It is also its difficulty, because Taurus accumulates indiscriminately: possessions, habits, routines and the residue of situations it long ago outgrew.

Diamond's amplification cuts both ways here, and that is precisely why it is useful. A stone that magnifies whatever it touches will make plain what Taurus has been holding onto without examining. It rewards intention and exposes inertia, and inertia is the Taurean failure mode.

Its Crown and Third Eye action brings purity and clarity — qualities Taurus values in principle and defers in practice, because sorting what to keep is uncomfortable work.

Diamond is also the hardest natural substance known, which suits the sign that measures worth by endurance. For April-born Taurus, it is the stone that asks what is actually worth keeping.

All Stones of April‍ ‍

Diamond

Primary and Traditional

Diamond holds both of April's principal tiers. It is the modern birthstone confirmed in 1912 and the traditional stone that preceded it, and its position has been unchallenged for roughly five hundred years.‍ ‍

For those born in April, Diamond works through the Crown and Third Eye chakras. It has been revered since antiquity for its unconquerable hardness, but the property that matters most in practice is amplification: Diamond magnifies whatever passes through it, including the energy of other stones worn alongside it.‍ ‍

That makes it a stone that responds to how you use it. Held with a clear intention, it strengthens clarity, focus, and spiritual connection. Held carelessly, it magnifies whatever is already loudest.‍ ‍

April people are born into the most forward-moving month of the year, when everything is starting at once. Diamond suits that position — but it rewards those who decide what they are actually starting. Purity, strength, and commitment: April's stone asks for direction, and returns it multiplied.

Opal‍ ‍

Mystical (Tibetan)‍ ‍

The Tibetan mystical list, dating to at least 1000 CE, gives April to opal — and the contrast with diamond could hardly be sharper.

Where diamond is uniform, hard and colourless, opal is unrepeatable. No two specimens are alike, and its play of colour led the Romans to call it the Eye Stone, seeing in it the light of every precious gem gathered into one.

Its key property is amplification of a particular kind: opal magnifies the emotions and desires of the wearer and sends them outward. It does not soothe or moderate. It makes what you already feel more visible — to you first, and then to others.

For April-born people, that is a genuinely different proposition from diamond. Diamond amplifies intention; opal amplifies feeling. April is the month of stated plans, and opal asks the question underneath them — whether the plan is one you actually want.

Creativity, hope and self-expression, working through the Crown.

Sapphire‍ ‍

Historical (Hebrew and Arabic)‍ ‍

Both biblical traditions assign April to sapphire, and they agree with each other — which is uncommon enough to be worth noting. Diamond displaced it only from around the 15th century.

For April-born people drawn to the older assignment, sapphire offers something diamond does not. It is the Stone of Wisdom in the deepest sense, worn by royalty, scholars and clergy as a symbol of honest judgement and divine favour. Working through the Throat and Third Eye chakras, it joins insight to expression — knowing what is true and being willing to say so.

Where diamond amplifies and opal exposes, sapphire discerns.

One caution belongs with it. A Roman or Hebrew "sapphire" was in all likelihood lapis lazuli rather than the corundum we mean today; ancient names described colour, not mineral species. The tradition is real and documented. The identification is an interpretation, and we present it as one.

A Note on Sources‍ ‍

Every stone above comes from a documented birthstone list. The modern assignment derives from the 1912 National Association of Jewelers list as amended, confirmed by the GIA and the American Gem Society. The traditional assignment comes from the Polish list of the 16th to 18th centuries. The Mystical list is Tibetan and dates to at least 1000 CE; the Ayurvedic and Hindu lists originate in the Indus Valley around 1500 BCE. The Hebrew and Arabic assignments derive from readings of the Breastplate of Aaron following Josephus in the first century CE.
